Hill Residence | Boulder, CO

Hill Residence blurs the line between new and old through design elements that tie its opposing eras together.  Horizontal datum weaves through strong verticality of form and material, creating the desired language and connection between them.  Originally designed by Jeremiah Whitney in 1970 as a Bohemian oasis in Boulder, CO, it sits perched precariously on a hillside overlooking the city and surrounded by natural monuments like the Boulder Flatirons.

While the home has evolved and modernized, it maintains its charm through framed viewing nooks, unique and unexpected interior features, and the contrast of new and original materials. Continuing important themes of indoor/outdoor connection, material selection inspired by its natural surroundings, and supporting the original architect’s expression of classic 1970’s “form first” design, were paramount throughout the process.

Renewed focus on energy efficient building systems with an emphasis on sustainability and fire suppression supports the new design interventions.  New exterior systems including vertical fiber-cement, Lava Rock, and Rockwool continuous insulation creates a strong combination of fire-resistant cladding, thermal comfort, and improved indoor air quality.

Original framing and foundations are reinforced with new structural components and the reuse of original masonry floors assist in natural heating and cooling of the home.  New HVAC systems, as well as Passivhaus certified insulation and all new high efficiency Marvin Modern windows maximize indoor comfort.
